ABA Therapy Techniques Tailored to Your Child’s Needs

At Asteri Treatment Center, we specialize in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a scientifically-backed approach that focuses on understanding and improving meaningful behaviors. ABA therapy is a proven method used to encourage positive behavioral changes. Our ABA therapy techniques can help your child in a variety of ways.

What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapeutic method focused on understanding how behavior is influenced by environmental factors. ABA therapy’s main goal is to increase positive behaviors, reduce challenging behaviors, and teach new skills in structured and measurable ways. This approach is highly individualized and culturally sensitive, making it suitable for children from a wide range of backgrounds and traditions.

The structured techniques of ABA therapy pave the way for measurable improvements in communication, social interactions, life skills, and more.  At Asteri Treatment Center, we deliver ABA therapy where it’s most needed. This ensures that the child receives support in familiar, real-world environments, enhancing their success.

ABA Therapy Techniques We Utilize

Always, our treatments are tailored to the child. Sometimes, we use treatments that focus on breaking down complex skills or behaviors into smaller, more manageable steps. Each step is taught individually through a series of trials, with positive reinforcement provided for correct responses.

For example, when teaching a child how to identify colors, the therapist may present one color at a time and reward correct answers. Over time, consistent practice builds a solid foundation of understanding.  By using real-life scenarios, children are encouraged to apply what they’ve learned in practical ways.

For instance, if the goal is to enhance communication skills, the therapist might use snack time as an opportunity to help the child practice asking for their favorite food.

Other techniques involve starting with a series of easy tasks that the child is likely to complete successfully, followed by introducing more challenging requests. The momentum created by completing the easier tasks builds confidence and increases the likelihood of success with harder tasks.

Reinforcing Good Behaviors and Progress Forward

Positive reinforcement is central to ABA therapy. Desired behaviors are rewarded with something the child finds motivating, such as verbal praise, toys, or a favorite activity. This strengthens the likelihood of the behavior being repeated in the future.

Other treatments may focus on reducing unwanted behaviors by removing the reinforcement that previously maintained them. For example, if a child learns that tantrums will not result in receiving a desired item, the frequency of tantrums is likely to decrease over time. This often requires consistency and collaboration between the therapist and caregivers.

We may use a technique called “prompting and fading.” Prompting involves providing guidance to encourage the child to perform a desired behavior. Types of prompts may include verbal cues, gestures, or visual aids. Over time, the prompts are gradually reduced, allowing the child to perform the behavior independently.

For more complex tasks, behavior analysts use task analysis to break down activities into smaller components. With chaining, these smaller tasks are taught in sequence. For example, teaching a child to brush their teeth might involve breaking it into steps like picking up the toothbrush, applying toothpaste, brushing, and rinsing.
